PS4-Japan-launch-livestream

While the majority of the world has already got their hands on the PlayStation 4s (PS4), Japan only finally got theirs last Friday on 22 February 2014. A launch party was held at the Sony Building at Ginza few hours before the actual launch at midnight and 30 lucky people, queuing for the PS4 at Ginza were invited to join the launch party.

At the PS4 launch party, there were game tournaments of two launch titles Killzone: Shadow Fall and FIFA 14, and special guest appearances by the likes of Hideo Kojima(MGS) and Toshihiro Nagoshi(SEGA) to celebrate the PS4’s arrival into the Japanese console market.

From then, according to sales figures from Famitsu, 322,083 PS4s were bought in just the first weekend of its release. That’s an impressive figure considering the PlayStation 3 (PS3) only sold 88,443 consoles on its first two days.  The PS4 also barely manages to beat the Nintendo WiiU whose sales is 308,570 in the first two days, by a slight margin.  While it is impossible to beat the huge numbers from the PS2 launch, Sony are off to a great start in their home nation thus far.

As of the most recent numbers, the PS4 has sold 5.3 million (not including Japan launch) and the Xbox One has sold 3.4 million. While the PS4 is dominating overall sales numbers, the Xbox One is still managing to get impressive numbers even with all the flak Microsoft is getting.

More exciting days will be coming with many AAA titles set to launch in the upcoming month of March, with Metal Gear Solid V(PS3, PS4, XB1, XB360), Titanfall(PC, XB1, XB360), Dark Souls II(PC, PS3, XB360) and InFamous: Second Son(PS4) so expect both consoles to ship even more numbers!
