It is one of the gaming world’s biggest mysteries and has been debated on for three decades. Many fans had been wondering what the heck were Mario and Luigi’s full names? Well, during the Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary Conference, game creator and legend, Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed the answer.

The answer itself is quite surprising, because the controversial explanation from the 1993 live-action movie starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo really is the answer to that question.

The creator, Miyamoto confirms it, their real names are actually Mario Mario and Luigi Mario, and it really kind of makes sense as they are called the SUPER MARIO BROTHERS.

And as Nintendo celebrates the 30th anniversary of the lovable Italian plumber, here’s a tribute video featuring fan-made creations from Super Mario Maker.

Nintendo’s English youtube channel also started streaming an old 1980’s interview with Mario designer, Takashi Tezuka, who talked about how the games were created.

Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, and the rest of the Mario World gang have been the part of many people’s childhoods, including mine, and to see this iconic video game reach its 30th anniversary is just a wonder in of itself. We’ve seen video game franchises come and go, but Mario has always been there, and it looks like he and Luigi will still be part of many childhoods to come.
