As we usher in the new year, much to our delight, we will be pampered with series anew. Talking statues, immortals, a peek into a dystopian Tokyo, the comeback of an alien songstress and not forgetting about that octopus teacher.

These are just some of the new series that will welcome us in the new year in 2016.

Boku Dake ga Inai Machi

boku

Date Airing: 8 Jan 2016
Starring: Shinnosuke Mitsushima, Aoi Yuuki
Genre: mystery

Summary: This series is based on a manga written by Kei Sanbe. The series tells the story of Satoru Fujinuma (CV:Shinnosuke Mitsushima) , a budding mangaka, who has a strange ability to prevent life threatening events from ever happening by jumping back in time. But what happens when this life threatening events affects his own life? Will this change the course of his life?

Why would I watch this? There is nothing much of a good feel when you try to be an everyday hero, and Satoru is doing just that but what happens when it now involves his own own life. How will it play out when someone will die by his hands. How will Satoru prevent this catastrophe from ever happening? How can he clear his name in the process when he travels back in time and with him being in grade school? There’s no “Hallelujah Chance” for him! Time is racing.  If you are curious, the series has spawned a live action film of the same title starring Tetsuya Fujiwara.

Active Raid: Kidou Kyoushuushitsu Dai Hakkei

active

Cast: Nobunaga Shimazaki, Sakurai Takahiro, Ari Ozawa, Masayo Kurata
Date Airing: 7 Jan 2016
Genre: Action

Summary: The story of an assistant inspector, Asami Kazari (CV: Ari Ozawa) and her mission to revive the lifeless “The Eight” division of the bureau, dubbed as the Special Public Security Division Third Mobile Assault Eighth Unit. This division is handled by senior superintendent,Rin Yamabuki(CV:Masayo Kurata) and her two equally capable lieutenant, Takeru Kuroki(CV:Nobunaga Shimazaki) and Sōichirō Sena(CV: Sakurai Takahiro). The unit is out to fight crimes and save Tokyo from pending abomination.

Why would I watch this? This is an anime-only series and is not based on any manga or light novel. For the better of it, we will only get to know of the ending of the series when the last episode unfolds ( Eat that Wikipedia!). Although the series is yet another human-needs-saving-from-the- clutches-of-evil-in-a-dystopian world, we might actually be able to encounter something different with these high powered exoskeleton, like a Gundam Mobile Suit being worn (recall the not-so-recent Tiger & Bunny Series). On the plus side, the series have gotten seiyuus like Sakurai Takahiro(Suzaku Kururugi in Code Geass) and Nobunaga Shimazaki(Licht Jekylland Todoroki in Servamp), it will be an interesting tandem. Also, the series will be under the guidance of director Goro Taniguchi, who directed series like Code Geass, Code Geass R2 and Scryed. The series should be in good hands.

Ajin

ajin

Date Airing: 16 January 2016
Genre: mystery, thriller
Cast: Yoshimasa Hosoya, Daisuke Hirakawa, Mamoru Miyano , Sakurai Takahiro

Summary: They dwell among us, dine among us, and dress like us, but if there is one thing that they’re not, they’re not allowed to die or rather they can’t die. For these 47 people, who are labeled as Ajin, life is such a cruel place, they must run and hide before they suffer persecution and become government lab rats.

Why would I watch this? Although this idea is not something new — this eerily reminded me of Tokyo Ghoul or like some cold case from Meitantei Conan and like scenes from Hiroya Oku’s Gantz. There’s still that hint in things that one might look forward to in this series. The idea of why there is only a cluster of immortals left in the world or where did they originate from will surely pique the interest of the audience. The series is fraught with cat-and-mouse chase scenes between the Ajins and the government. Will the protagonist be able to save his skin? How will the chase end? Are there still more people like them? We will only know to the answer to these questions once the anime starts on 16 January 2016.
