The special will follow Lupin as he tries to save Rebecca Rossellini (again), this time from kidnappers. The special will also feature Lupin going head-to-head with a mysterious “Masked Count” for the “inheritance of Count Cagliostro,” which of course is a reference to the classic Hayao Miyazaki movie starring the wily thief, The Castle of Cagliostro.

The anime itself is sounding like an ode to the Castle of Cagliostro, as Kazuhide Tomonaga, who worked as an animator alongside Hayao Miyazaki in the classic Lupin III story, is acting as the chief director of this special. Lupin III: Italian Game is slated to air in NTV’s Friday Roadshow programming block on 8 January 2016.
