Makoto Shinkai (Voices of a Distant Star, The Garden of Words, 5 Centimeters Per Second) is one of the most respected anime directors in Japan, and that is saying a lot as the country is known for heavyweights like Academy Award winner, Hayao Miyazaki, Gundam creator, Yoshiyuki Tomino, Evangelion’s Hideaki Anno, and Summer Wars director, Mamoru Hosoda. Now, this famed director has announced his latest work, and it will be called Kimi No Na Wa., which means “your name”. Here is the trailer:

Kimi No Na Wa. will be the 42-year old director’s first new work since his critically-acclaimed Garden of Words, and promises to be a “tale of love and miracles” which will bring together Mitsuha Miyamizu, a girl living in a rural mountain area with her father, sister, and grandmother, and Taki Tachibana, a boy living in the bustling city streets of Tokyo. The two have never met, but have become connected by a dream of one another.

Last year, Shinkai announced that he was working on a new film, and a year later, this is what he was working on. But he won’t be alone in this stunning new film, as Masashi Ando, who has worked on Ghibli films such as Spirited Away and When Marnie Was There, will be serving as his animation director, with AnoHana’s Masayoshi Tanaka doing the character designs. It is scheduled to hit cinemas in Japan starting August next year.
