The Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 has affected countless lives in Japan, and the effects of the earthquake’s devastation are still felt by a lot of people in Japan today. That certainly rings true in a new animated short by Gainax Fukushima, the branch studio of Gainax in one of the most affected areas of the earthquake-tsunami-nuclear disaster, Fukushima.

Titled “Omoi no Kakera” (Fragments of Feelings), the anime is a 2-minute short which takes a look at a young earthquake survivor, Rina Satou (voiced by Kiyono Yasuno). Rina lost her mother, voiced by Miho Arakawa, in the great 2011 earthquake and is now living with her father in temporary housing, as many affected by the disaster still have no proper homes to return to even after all these years.

The short animation is part of the Great East Japan Earthquake Reconstruction Support Campaign, with Medaka Box director, Shouji Saeki, responsible for both directing the project, as well as doing the storyboards. The characters were designed by Manami Umeshita (Stella Women’s Academy, High School Division Class C3).
