The announcement for this new Naruto prequel spin-off anime was made during a stage presentation for the franchise during the Jump Festa 2015 event in Tokyo. The anime follows Itachi from a young child dreaming to be the Hokage, to a young ANBU operative, before finally turning his back on the entire Uchiha clan. It is slated to premiere on spring 2016.

The anime will be based on Takashi Yano’s prequel novels, Itachi Shinden. The novels are split into two books, the first part, Itachi Shinden: Koumyou-hen, follows Itachi as a child, whose life changes drastically after seeing what a battlefield is really like at the age of 4. The second novel,  Itachi Shinden: Anya-Hen, follows Itachi as he joins the ranks of the ANBU and sees the darkness which separates the Uchihas from the rest of the village that he loves.
