After fighting for #TeamIronMan in Captain America: Civil War as Black Widow/ Natasha Romanov, Scarlett Johansson will be taking another badass role for the Hollywood film adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell. DreamWorks and Paramount have now revealed the first look for the upcoming movie, which features ScarJo in costume as Motoko Kusanagi.

GHOST IN THE SHELL

The casting has been met with mixed reactions, with many fans of the original manga and anime movie saying they wanted to see an Asian actress in the lead role, however, it seems like DreamWorks is planning to be loyal to the original work, costume, hair, and all… except for turning Motoko white of course.

Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, who produced the anime film adaptation, as well as the Ghost in the Shell: ARISE TV anime, is also part of the movie’s staff, which promises not to take the path taken by Dragon ball Evolution. Filming for the movie has already started in Wellington, New Zealand, with Snow White and the Huntsman director,  Rupert Sanders, directing the movie.

So far, the cast includes:

  • Scarlett Johansson as Motoko Kusanagi
  • Pilou Asbæk as Batou
  • Michael Pitt as The Laughing Man
  • Takeshi Kitano as Daisuke Aramaki
  • Juliette Binoche as Dr. Ouelet

Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Lasarus Ratuere, Yutaka Izumihara and Tuwanda Manyimo will all be playing Section 9 members, and their roles will be revealed in the days to come. Kaori Momoi has also been announced for the movie. The film is set to premiere in America on 31 March 2017.
