The annual Kyoto Animation Awards have been a good way for the renowned animation studio, Kyoto Animation, to determine which works they would adapt into an anime. For instance, Chuunibyou series, which won the Novel “Encouragement” award back in 2009, and Myriad Colors Phantom World, which won the same award in 2012. However, this year, no work was awarded the official prizes in the novel, scenario, and manga categories.

Despite no official winners being named, three awards were given the Special Jury Prize this year, and they are:

  • Kyoko-san Fly High by Eiji Yoshikawa
  • Yoruta no Moriyumi Dojo by Kotoko Ayano
  • Kono Hoshizora ni wa Kimi ga Tarinai! by Hoeru Yutake

The Special Jury Prize is more like an “Honorable Mention” for the awards, but several works which have gotten this “Honorable Mention” have later go on to receive anime adaptations of their own. They include Kyoukai no Kanata, or Beyond the Boundary, and High Speed!, which would later be known as Free! These works did not win the Grand Prize, but the “Encouragement” award. The three winners of the Special Jury Prize also have the possibility to get adapted into an anime by KyoAni.

The awards take a look at unpublished-yet-promising works in the novel, scenario, and manga categories, and award 1 million yen to the Grand Prize winners, and 100,000 yen to the winners of the “Encouragement” award. They also award 300,000 yen to the  “Animation DO Special Prize” winner, however, no winner for that award has been named this year. No Grand Prize winners were also named last year.
