Skydance Television, an American independent production company for TV series, has revealed their plans to adapt Reki Kawahara’s bestselling science fiction light novel series, Sword Art Online. The company has officially acquired the global rights to the series, and are planning to adapt it into a TV show.
Avatar scriptwriter, Laeta Kalogridis, has been charged in writing the script, and will also act as the TV series’ executive producer, alongside Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross. Kalogridis, who has written plenty of big Hollywood movie scripts like Terminator Genesis, White House Down, and of course, Avatar, has admitted that she is a huge SAO fan. She said: “For years I have been inspired by the inventive and masterful storytelling of the SAO franchise,” and added that “I’m thrilled to get the opportunity to work with such talented partners to bring this cutting-edge yet timeless story to a new format at Skydance.”

Meanwhile, Skydance is also planning a virtual reality experience based on Sword Art Online for their Skydance Interactive branch. Skydance Media CEO Ellison explains it as ” a full-scale and wide-ranging set of live-action franchise extensions across our business verticals, beginning with television.”
Reki Kawahara’s light novels have been a huge hit in the US, and with the American market getting more and more interested in Japanese works, with titles like Death Note and Ghost in the Shell getting American adaptations, it was only a matter of time until Sword Art Online finally got noticed by Hollywood.
