Love Live! has made stars out of previously unknown seiyuu, as the franchise has been known in casting relative newcomers and unknows in the lead roles. However, the same could not be said for the seiyuu playing the mothers of the school idols.

It seems that there is a trend for Love Live! to cast big name veteran seiyuu to voice the moms of the school idols, the latest one being Chika’s mom from Love Live! Sunshine!!, as she is voiced by none other than the Queen of Tsundere herself, Rie Kugimiya. She is best known for voicing tsundere roles, such as Shakugan no Shana’s Shana and Toradora’s Taiga. In addition, she also voiced Full Metal Alchemist’s Alphonse Elric and Gintama’s Kagura.

And while Chika has one very tsundere mom, Riko has a magical girl/mecha pilot princess/immortal who never seems to age at all for a mother, as her mom is voiced by the forever young Nana Mizuki, best known for voicing Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha’s Fate Testarossa and Cross Ange’s Ange.

The trend actually started with the original Love Live! anime, with Sore Ga Seiyuu mangaka and veteran seiyuu, Masumi Asano, voicing Honoka’s mom.

Meanwhile, Noriko Hidaka, who voices Akane Tendo from Ranma 1/2, as well as the voice of Psycho-Pass’s Dominator, is the one voicing Kotori’s mom.

Maki also has a very capable mom, because she is voiced by Kikuko Inoue, one of the seiyuu responsible for the 90’s Seiyuu Boom and voice of Oh My Goddess’s Belldandy.

As for Nico’s mom, you could say that she’s just as wacky as her daughter, as she is voiced by Sailor Moon herself, Kotono Mitsuishi, who is no stranger to voicing moms, as she also voiced Sei’s mom in Gundam Build Fighters, Rinko Iori.
