When people are touting renowned anime director, Makoto Shinkai, as the “Next Hayao Miyazaki”, they may have been onto something, as Shinkai’s latest animated feature film, your name., or Kimi no na wa., has made history as it reaches the fabled 10 billion yen mark.

Reaching 10 billion yen in sales is quite the milestone, as only Studio Ghibli films, or Hayao Miyazaki films to be specific, are the only ones to seem to reach that mark… until now that is. So far, only Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, Ponyo, and The Wind Rises, all films by Hayao Miyazaki, have broken through that fabled 10 billion mark before your name. was shown in Japanese theatres.

In just a span of 28 days, the film has grossed over 10 billion yen, and has sold over 7.7 million tickets as of 21 September 2016. The film has ranked #1 in the Japanese box office for four straight weeks, knocking off the previous #1 movie, Shin Godzilla, which was directed by Hayao Miyazaki’s own student, Hideaki Anno, the creator of Evangelion.
