We are finally saying goodbye to one of Weekly Shonen Jump’s most beloved comedy manga, as it was announced that Osamu Akimoto’s long-running police comedy manga, Kochira Katsushika-ku Kamearikouen-mae Hashutsujo, or KochiKame for short, is ending its historic 40-year run. The final chapter will be on this year’s 42nd issue of Shonen Jump, due out on 17th September.

It has been said that lasting three months in Shonen Jump is an achievement of itself, and lasting five years would be a milestone, but KochiKame has been in serialization for 40 years now, making its debut chapter back in 1976. It has outlasted many Shonen Jump manga, including Dragon Ball, Naruto, Yu Yu Hakusho, Ruruouni Kenshin, and most recently, Nisekoi and Bleach, and many are even saying that even One Piece won’t be able to reach that 40-year achievement. KochiKame is currently the magazine’s longest-running manga in serialization.

Osamu Akimoto has stated that he now has an idea about his next work following KochiKame, however, the development of that new work has not yet been decided on as of the moment.

The manga’s 200th and final volume (which is also a record for any Jump manga), will also be shipped out on 17th September, the same day as the release of its final chapter. The manga has received several anime and live-action adaptations, including TV anime adaptations, anime specials, a TV drama, and a live-action movie, as well as a stage play.
