Bandai has decided to tear down their iconic life-size statue of the RX-78-2 Gundam from the original Mobile Suit Gundam series. It had become one of Odaiba’s most recognisable tourist spots since 2012, to be torn down for a project, they are planning to announce.

The Gundam is scheduled to be torn down on 5 March 2017.

The life-size Gundam isn’t the only casualty, with the Gundam Front Tokyo theme park and shop, located on the 7th floor of Diver City Tokyo, also to be closing, however, a month later on 5 April 2017.

Bandai would also be temporarily halting the Tokyo Gundam Project, which aims, is to revitalise the city’s waterfront area partnering with the Tokyo local government.

Bandai has promised that there will be new projects to replace them, and would be making the announcements in the future. An ambitious plan for a moving life-size Gundam is slated to be revealed in 2019, but Bandai did not mention if that would be the one replacing the iconic life-size Gundam currently standing in front of Diver City Tokyo.

If you haven’t been to the iconic site, you now have limited time to make your homage.
