The beloved game that redefined the Real Time Strategy (RTS) genre is getting a facelift. Mark Morhaime, Blizzard’s President, announced the high definition remake at the I <3 Starcraft event in Seoul, South Korea on Sunday.

StarCraft: Remastered will have the original StarCraft and the expansion StarCraft Brood Wars bundled together in the re-release. It will retain the game’s original campaigns and multi-player mode updated for 4K Ultra High Definition (4K UHD), as well as re-recorded versions the original soundtrack and dialogues. Briefing presented to the players in between campaign missions will also be revamped.

With the game’s graphics receiving an update Blizzard will also introduce a zooming system  tot he game, allowing players to “zoom out for a Battlecruiser’s view of the battlefield, or zoom in to see the veins on a Mutalisk’s wings.”


In a press release by Blizzard, Morhaime said, “StarCraft is a pure distillation of Blizzard’s DNA—its story, its balance, and all the little details reflect our long-running commitment to epic entertainment, and it’s been a staple in competitive gaming and esports for almost 20 years,”and “With StarCraft: Remastered, we’re modernizing the original game’s visuals, audio, and online support to ensure that players can enjoy StarCraft for another 20 years and beyond.”.

StarCraft Remastered will be on Blizzard’s Blizzard platform (formally Battle.Net), this will allow the game to include “advanced matchmaking; full connectivity to Blizzard’s gaming network for social features and updates; cloud saving for campaign progress, custom maps, replays, and keybinds”.

StarCraft Remastered arrives on Windows PC and Mac this Summer and will be available in 13 languages. Check the trailer for the announcement down below.

On top of the remake, Blizzard will be releasing an updated version of StarCraft Anthology completely free later this week. The update will include a variety of bug fixes and new features. The update also adds compatibility to modern operating systems and a new anti-cheat system.
