Japanese anime director, Mamoru Hosoda, has made a name for himself with films like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, The Boy and the Beast, and of course, Wolf Children. Now, entertainment news magazine, Variety, revealed news about his next film project.

Hosoda revealed to Variety that his next film is “Mirai”. According to the report, the film’s story will be:

“Mirai” follows a 4-year old boy who is struggling to cope with the arrival of a little sister in the family, until things turn magical. A mysterious garden in the backyard of the boy’s home becomes a gateway allowing the child to travel back in time and encounter his mother as a little girl and his great-grandfather as a young man. These fantasy-filled adventures allow the child to change his perspective and help him become the big brother he was meant to be.

They also revealed that the film will be getting a representation at this month’s Cannes Film Festival. They then added that they expect to complete the film sometime in May 2018.

The film’s story fulfills Hosoda’s previous promise about his next movie being about siblings. In a previous interview, he said that after tackling the theme of motherhood in Wolf Children, and then fatherhood in The Boy and the Beast, his latest project would still be centering around family members, this time tackling the relationships between siblings.

The director previously stated that the work is top secret. But now that he’s revealed its title and story, one can’t help but wonder how it will go. As of the moment, information is still scarce, but expect the staff to reveal more in the days ahead.
