Overwatch is celebrating its first anniversary and with it a whole new event with new skins, sprays, and emotes. These new emotes feature Overwatch heroes dancing, from D.Va mimicking the Voltron Dance off in Robot Chicken, to Winston’s Twist, the references for these dances were picked up rather quickly by eagle-eyed fans.

Perhaps the most surprising of these were Mei’s rendition of Hare Hare Yukai, the closing theme to the classic anime, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, which debuted back in 2006. Known for its unique blend of romance, comedy, and hijinks, the series won over a large portion of anime fans. The closing even had its own dance to match the catchy tune.

Not convinced with the similarities? Here’s a quick comparison between the two dances.

Tristan Cooper, an editor at Dorkly, compiled some of the remaining similarities, and you can check them out down below.

Mei’s dance is not the first time Blizzard has made references to popular anime series. With the release of D.Va in the company’s MOBA Heroes of the Storm, they included two new skins, one for her, and one for Overwatch’s resident ninja, Genji. Both these skins were reminiscent of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Genji also got a new skin for Overwatch’s anniversary event, and this time he looks like a character straight out of a Kamen Rider or Super Sentai series.

With the flurry of anime callouts in recent updates to Blizzard games, I highly doubt that this is the last time we’ll be making comparisons between Blizzard’s character skins and popular anime series.
