There’s an old saying in anime that suggests that we should never mix 3D and 2D together. However, a new trend in Japan is turning 3D into 2D. Called “nijigenka” (二次元化) or “2D-ification”, the trend is gaining much popularity in Japan, especially in social media.

Japanese illustrators are turning pictures from the real world, and turning them into 2D illustrations. Several images have started flooding twitter, as well as Matome Naver and 2ch. Mostly, they turn images of seiyuu into the characters they voice, but they also feature normal everyday people. Here are a few more examples:

So far, the trend only gained popularity in Japan. However, knowing the magic of the internet, we might see a few from other countries soon enough…
