Grape-kun has captured the hearts of the internet after becoming attacked to a cardboard cutout of his species’ own Friends counterpart. However, after a battle with old age, the lovable Humboldt penguin sadly passed away. A new photo of Tobu Zoo’s Humboldt Penguin enclosure confirms the sad reality, as the Kemono Friends cutout of Hululu is missing, together with her #1 admirer.

Tobu Zoo itself made a mini shrine for fans to leave flowers. It also featured artworks from fans who grew to love the Humboldt Penguin. Even Mine Yoshizaki, Kemono Friends’ character designer, contributed an artwork.

Now, fans all over the world mourned the loss, and posted tributes all over social media.

Rest in Peace Grape-kun, enjoy your time with Hululu in the great Japari Park in the sky!
