Yoshiki Tanaka’s epic science fiction novels, The Legend of the Galactic Heroes, have thrilled readers and anime fans for generations. Now, the SciFi epic will be getting itself its own live-action film adaptation with a brand new movie trilogy.

The first film in this trilogy will premiere sometime in 2020, with Chinese film production company, Jiaxuan Global Pictures, heading the films’ production. The SciFi franchise’s official website also revealed that creator Yoshiki Tanaka himself is on board the new adaptation. He said that originally, he thought that a love-action adaptation for The Legend of the Galactic Heroes won’t be possible. However, he also added that he’s very excited for the new live-action film trilogy himself.

The original space opera novels follow the conflict between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance. In particular, it takes a look at the personal stories of the Galactic Empire’s Reinhard von Lohengramm, as well as the Alliance’s Yang Wen-Li. Artland anime studio also developed the novels into a successful anime franchise. The franchise received over 100 installments from 1988 to 2000, as well as a new upcoming anime from Production IG.
