When it comes to sports manga, Ikki Kajiwara and Tetsuya Chiba’s Ashita no Joe set the bar for later series. And with the new year comes the manga’s 50th anniversary. Now, a new tribute video takes a look at some of the anime and manga’s famous scenes to celebrate this milestone.
Ikki Kajiwara wrote the manga’s story, while Tetsuya Chiba illustrated it. Together, the two launched the manga inside the pages of Shonen Magazine way back in 1968. It then went on to become one of the most iconic anime in Japan, and became the bar for later sports manga to follow.

Considered a true icon of Japanese pop culture, the manga follows the exploits of boxer Joe Yabuki. Growing up in an orphanage, Joe would often get himself into trouble, and even lands in juvenile prison. However, everything changes after he meets former boxing trainer, Danpei.
Aside from the video, they also launched a 50th anniversary website. There, it teases the new Megalo Box TV anime, which will also premiere sometime this year. Expect the classic series to pull out even more events and celebrations as it goes through its golden anniversary year.
