Hikaru no Go was written by Yumi Hotta and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, with the portrayal of go games supervised by professional player Yukari Umezawa. It tells the story of a young boy named Hikaru Shindo, who unwittingly summons the spirit of Fujiwara no Sai, an ancient prodigy in the game of Go. Together they go on a journey of learning, and eventually Hikaru learns to love the game and become a professional player.

The popularity of “Hikaru no Go” made a positive impact on the ancient Japanese sport, and attracted a new generation of players not just in Japan but all over the world.
