Japanese music composer Nobuo Uemetsu made a name for himself by composing songs for the Final Fantasy franchise. And now, for the very first time, he’s coming to perform on stage right here in Singapore. It will be happening on Saturday, 1st September, at the University Cultural Centre Hall, NUS.
And this won’t just be an instrumental one, because singer Akiko Kawano will be joining the band as well. She is the original performer for several themes such as “Eyes on Me” (FINAL FANTASY VIII), “Melodies of Life” (FINAL FANTASY IX) and the Terra Battle Main Theme.
The concerts of Nobuo Uematsu / EARTHBOUND PAPAS are the only ones where the composer plays on stage (on the opposite of his orchestra concerts where he is just attending as a guest), leading the group, being his heart project that he leads with force, and on which he is accompanied by his friends and composers of video game music : Tsutomu Narita (Granblue Fantasy), Yoshitaka Hirota (Shadow Hearts), Michio Okamiya (Anata wo Yurusanai, Lord of Vermillion), and Chihiro Fujioka (Burai, Mario and Luigi, Super Mario RPG).
Aside from Nobuo Uemetsu/Earthbound Papas’ Singapore stop, they will also be visiting other countries. These include Paris, London, and Berlin.
Nobuo Uematsu is one of the most celebrated composers in the video game field. He achieved global recognition for his work on the FINAL FANTASY series, which many world-class orchestras around the world have performed. Many also recognise him as a major contributor in the increasing appreciation and awareness of video game music. A prime example is the “FINAL FANTASY VIII” theme song, “Eyes on Me,” which he composed and produced. His song featured Hong Kong pop star Faye Wong and sold a record 400,000 copies. It also won “Song of the Year (Western Music)” at the 14th Annual Japan Gold Disc Awards in 1999, which was the first time in history that music from a video game had attained this illustrious honor.
The music from the game series has grown to such notoriety around the world. Because of this, he became one of the “Innovators” in Time Magazine’s “Time 100: the Next Wave Music “ feature.
