Via Comic Natalie: On the sweltering summer morning of 19 July 2018, the artworks exhibition of Japanese female mangaka and illustrator – Chica Umino – opened in Ginza, Tokyo. Titled “Honey and Lion and… ～The World of Chica Umino ～”exhibition is taking place at the level 8 events space of Matsuya Ginza Building in downtown Tokyo.
The exhibition was thus named base on two of the most iconic long-running manga series that the creator/artist is known for – “Hachimitsu to Clover” (lit. ‘Honey and Clover’) and “Sangatsu no Lion” (lit. March Comes in Like a Lion’). The former has since ended its serialisation run in 2006, with 10 compiled tankoubon manga volumes released and sold under publisher Shueisha.
The latter series commenced serialisation under publisher Hakusensha’s ‘Young Animal’ manga magazine in 2007, and is currently still on-going with 13 compile with 13 compiled tankoubon manga volumes released. Both series have had anime series and live-action drama and movie adaptations.
The exhibition space is split into three distinctive zones – “Honey and Clover Corner”, “March Comes in Like a Lion Corner” and “Chica Umino’s Room”. The first two, as the corner name suggest, showcase concept artworks, design sketches, original manga manuscripts, and other small props and accessories associated with the mangaka’s two signature series “Honey and Clover” and “March Comes in Like a Lion”.
The special “Chica Umino’s Room” segment of the exhibition has delightful showcase of the mangaka’s favourite and treasured items and collections – cherished knick-knacks collected throughout the course of her career; including a corkboard tacked full of a delightful collage of photographs of her adorable pet cat ‘Bun-chan’.
The blank wall space near the exit of the exhibition featured an adorable set of caricatures/sketches featuring memorable iconic characters from the mangaka’s series, thanking fans and visitors for their attendance and support of the exhibition.
The exhibition is of course never complete with a section for merchandise and goods sales – fans may purchase and bring home a series of delightful range of specially-produced/designed goods as keepsakes – like the few samples pictured. The full range of exhibition merchandise can be found here.
“Honey and Lion and… ～The World of Chica Umino ～” Arts Exhibition will run for a short 10-days duration from 19 to 29 July 2018. Details on ticketing are listed on the exhibition’s website, so fans of Chica Umino and her works who happen to be in Tokyo during this period should definitely try to visit this event – as, quoting the mangaka’s hand-written welcome-message posted at the exhibition’s entrance –“this is the last summer of Japan’s Heisei Era, so let’s create some delightful memories in the world of my art!”
