Sailor Moon’s classic OP song, “Moonlight Densetsu” is arguably one of the most iconic Anisongs ever. And as the franchise celebrates its 25th anniversary, a Japanese musical master is giving the song a traditional Japanese twist. Nami Kineie, a master of the traditional Japanese 3-string instrument, the Shamisen, played the song with her instrument. And now, the staff have finally released the video of her playing “Moonlight Densetsu”.
Now that’s certainly one unique cover, huh? Aside from Kineie-sensei on the Shamisen, the cover also featured other traditional Japanese musical instruments. This includes Makoto Takei on the shakuhachi (bamboo flute), Eriko Kumazawa on the 20-stringed koto, Masako Watanabe on the 17-string koto, and Jun Rokei on percussion.

The Japanese shamisen master also played other iconic otaku-related songs with traditional instruments. This includes the Touhou background song, Bad Apple. Her group also covered Hatsune Miku’s Senbonzakura song with Japanese instruments as well.
