The Seiun Awards celebrates speculative fiction, and is Japan’s own version of the Hugo and Nebula Awards. Many also consider it as one of Japan’s most prestigious awards for fiction. And now, the award-giving body for these Seiun Awards have now announced the winners for the Media and Manga categories.

Media Award: Kemono Friends

Manga Award: Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru (“And Yet the Town Moves”)

Kemono Friends debuted back in January 2017 as a TV anime based on an already-discontinued smartphone game. However, even if the game went down, the anime went on to become 2017’s biggest and most unexpected hit. Meanwhile, Masakazu Ishiguro’s Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru comedy manga wrapped up back in 2016. It received plenty of critical love and even got a TV anime back in autumn 2010.

Federation of Science Fiction Fan Groups of Japan oversee the awards and decide which franchises win. They then give out the awards annually during the Japan SF Convention.

Congratulations everyone!
