Dragon Pilot: Hisone & Masotan” is a new anime with a unique spin on the dragon-riding urban fantasy trope. It began airing on 13th April 2018 in Japan via Netflix, and will be released in English on the same platform very soon in September. The world premiere was held last weekend at Anime Expo, with the lucky panel attendees watching the first two episodes before everybody else!

“Dragon Pilot: Hisone & Masotan” tells the story of Hisone Amakasu, a recent recruit of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force posted at Gifu Air Base. She has a severe case of foot-in-mouth disease, and as such has trouble making friends and communicating with her peers.

That all changes when she was chosen by “Masotan”, an “OTF” or an Organic Transformed Flyer, to be their pilot. Unbeknownst to many, Masotan and his fellow “OTF” are dragons — and these modern-day dragons don armour that conceal their features as regular aircraft, thus hiding in plain sight.

“Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan” is animated by Bones, directed by Hiroshi Kobayashi, and written by Mari Okada. Toshinao Aoki did the original character designs, Yoshiyuki Ito did the animated character designs, and Shoji Kawamori was the main mechanical designer. The title was one of the big announcements at last year’s Tokyo Comic Con held in December 2017.
