When it comes to trailblazers in the manga industry, you can’t get any bigger than Osamu Tezuka. The legendary mangaka not only inspired countless other mangaka, but also gave us many classics. These include Jungle Emperor Leo, Phoenix, Black Jack, and of course, Astro Boy. He’s also responsible for Dororo, which they’re giving a modern twist with a new manga remake.

Monthly Champion RED magazine made the announcement, and revealed that Satoshi Shiki is drawing the manga. It will debut in the magazine’s December 2018 issue, due out on 19 October 2018. Shiki himself tweeted out a nice preview of the upcoming remake:

Tezuka launched the original manga back in 1967, before getting a black-and-white TV anime adaptation in 1969. Here’s how Vertical, which released a 3-part omnibus of the manga, describes the story:

Daigo Kagemitsu, who works for a Samurai general in Japan’s Warring States period, promises to offer 48 body parts of his unborn baby to 48 devils in exchange for complete domination of the country. When the baby boy is born, Daigo has him thrown into a river, hoping the boy will die. A kind sage, however, finds him and adopts him. The sage fits out his poor son with prosthetics.

Time goes by and the baby grows into a boy who calls himself Hyakkimaru. Everytime Hyakkimaru eliminates a devil, he retrieves one of his missing body parts. Hyakkimaru meets a boy thief named Dororo and together they travel the countryside in search of the devils who possess Hyakkimaru’s parts. Throughout their travels, they face monsters and ghosts.

The manga itself is inspiring a new TV anime by MAPPA, and also inspired a 2007 live-action film.
