In Japan, the sukajan, or “souvenir jacket” has become a rich part of many of Japan’s subcultures. These distinct embroidered jackets started out as actual souvenirs for American soldiers during Japan’s postwar rebuilding. However, it then grew to become a cultural statement in the later years. These jackets blend Americam, Japanese, and even Chinese art styles, and are also quite infamous as the Yakuza tend to wear them. And now, it’s getting an official Studio Ghibli version.

There are two main designs, namely one featuring the Catbus from My Neighbor Totoro, while the other features Ponyo. Each jacket is made from velvety fabric, and each one also features embroideries in the front, back, and sleeves.

GBL Tokyo is releasing these jackets starting September 2018. Each Ghibli sakajan costs about 3,218 yen and comes in S, M, L, and XL sizes.
