When we say live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender, it usually leaves a bad taste in people especially after the disastrous and poorly-received M. Night Shyamalan film. However, Nickelodeon seems to be trying to redeem itself by teaming up with Netflix to make a new live-action adaptation. And the good news? The franchise’s two creators, Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino, are both directing the new series! Yes folks, no M. Night Shyamalan this time! Oh, and they also released a new concept art for this new live-action Netflix series featuring Aang and Appa.

Here’s to hoping this one would turn out much better than the previous live-action…

As for the cast, Netflix hasn’t revealed anything yet. However, the staff have confirmed that the cast will be more “culturally appropriate”. This means that they won’t be White-Washing the eskimo-inspired Water Tribe or casting an all-Indian cast as the Fire Nation. Yes, we’re looking at you M. Night.

Konietzko and DiMartino also said that they “can’t wait to realize Aang’s world as cinematically as they always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast”. The duo also added that “it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build upon everyone’s great work on the original animated series and go even deeper into the characters, story, action and world-building. Netflix is wholly dedicated to manifesting our vision for this retelling, and we’re incredibly grateful to be partnering with them.”
