‘Anisong‘ has always been around – even before its rise in hype, popularity and recognition in the recent 10-plus years as a music genre of its own standing. They probably date back to as early as there had been Japanese animation broadcasts and distributions – no one could really conclude how long ago, but hazarding a guess: at least several decades back.
Japanese ISP giant NTT Resonant recently conducted a poll via its Data/Research and Analytics subsidiary Goo Ranking on fans’ favourite anisong from the 1990s – a period when the Japanese anime industry was believed to be booming in relations to future developments to the current generation. The poll was carried out amongst the subject poll of 500 male and female respondents of ages ranging between their 20s ~ 40s. We take a look at the top-10 results by fans’ choice!
1st place – unsurprisingly – goes to “Cruel Angel’s Thesis” (Zankoku na Tenshi no Te-ze), the opening theme of popular series Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995 – 1996)
2nd place: “Until the World Comes to an End” (Sekai ga Owaru Made wa), the 2nd ending theme of highschool basketball series Slam Dunk (1993 – 1996)
3rd place: “Freckles” (Sobakasu), the 1st opening theme of Rurouni Kenshin – AKAÂ ‘Samurai X’ (1996 – 1998)
4th place: goes to one of Slam Dunk’s themesongs “I’ve Got My Eyes Only on You” (Anata Dake Mitsumeteru)
5th place:Â Odoru Ponpokorin by the B.B. Queens – ending theme of Chibi Maruko-chan (1990 – 1992)
6th place – “Moonlight Legend” (Moonlight Densetsu) – opening theme of popular shoujo/fantasy series Pretty Soldier Sailormoon (1992 – 1993)
7th place – “1/3 of True Feelings” (1/3 no Junjou no Kanjo) – 6th ending theme of Rurouni Kenshin – AKA ‘Samurai X’ (1996 – 1998), performed by Japanese rock band ‘Siam Shade’.
Tying again at 7th place – “CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA” – the 1st opening theme of the popular series Dragonball Z (1986 – 1989)
9th place – again goes to one of Slam Dunk’s themesongs “I Want to Shout ‘I Love You'”(Kimi ga Suki da to Sakebitai)
10th place – “100% Courage” (Yuuki 100%) – the 1st opening theme of the adorable kids-ninja series Nintama Rantarou (1993 – 1994)
