Animage magazine’s November 2018 issue has announced that Osamu Tezuka’s classic manga, Dororo, is getting a 2.5D stage adaptation. They also revealed that its lead actor will also be highly involved in the manga’s latest TV anime adaptation.

According to the announcement, seiyuu Hiroki Suzuki will be playing protagonist Hyakkimaru, who he’s also voicing in the upcoming anime. However, Animage didn’t reveal any further details about the upcoming stage play adaptation.

As for the new Dororo anime, it will premiere in January 2019. It will be a co-production between Tezuka Productions and MAPPA, with Gundam UC’s Kazuhiro Furuhashi directing.

The story’s setting is during the Muromachi period, in the 1470’s after the Onin and Bunmei wars. It follows a man known as Hyakkimaru, who is missing 48 body parts, which 48 monsters stole. To exact his revenge, he takes a fake body and sets out to kill each and every one of the monsters and also take back his body parts.

The classic manga previously received a 26-episode black-and-white TV anime back in 1969. As for the source manga itself, Tezuka launhed it back in 1967, and has been circulating for over 50 years now.
