City Hunter is getting a more modern twist with the upcoming City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes. And as the film nears its release, mangaka Tsukasa Hojo is answering 30 questions relating to his manga. In other words, he’s answering one question for each year of City Hunter’s publication. And as expected, one of those questions is one of the most asked ones in the manga’s history. Why doesn’t Ryou dodge Kaori’s Hammer?

Hojo answered the question in his own twitter page. According to the mangaka, it’s not that Ryou couldn’t just dodge it, but because he won’t. He says that perhaps Ryou thinks there should be a punchline to his action, or perhaps deep within his heart, he wants Kaori to actually stop him.

Yes folks, despite being a serial womanizer, his feelings for Kaori are real! Well, that was pretty clear in almost every adaptation of the manga, huh?

As for the film itself, its cast will include:

  • Akira Kamiya as Ryo Saeba
  • Kazue Ikura as Kaori Makimura
  • Harumi Ichiryuusai (Youko Asagami) as Saeko Nogami
  • Tesshou Genda as Umibozu
  • Mami Koyama as Miki
  • Marie Iitoyo as Ai Shindou
  • Kouichi Yamadera as Shinji Mikuni
  • Houchu Ohtsuka as Vince Englert

The film will premiere on 8 February 2019, with Kenji Kodama, the director of the previous City Hunter anime, returning to direct the film. Kumiko Takahashi (Cardcaptor Sakura) is designing the characters. This will be the latest adaptation for the franchise, which includes the popular TV anime. It also includes a Hong Kong action movie starring Jackie Chan, as well as a 2011 Korean live-action series. The manga also inspired a French live-action film titled Nicky Larson (City Hunter’s title in France). And yes, there’s also a new Chinese live-action film adaptation coming up as well.
