Legendary anime studio, Production I.G is at it again, and this time, they’re doing an anime film. This time, they will be adapting Nahoko Uehashi’s award-winning medical fantasy novel series, Shika no Ou, or “The Deer King”.

The novels have more than 1.5 million copies in print. It’s a collection of interconnecting stories about people who fight against the outbreak of a certain mysterious disease. However, it mostly centers on a man named Van, a former soldier who is taken as a slave. And as he works in a salt mine, a mysterious disease breaks out.

The novels won several huge awards, including the Japan Booksellers’ Award and won the fourth “Japan Medical Novel Award” in 2015. Its author, Nahoko Uehashi, also won the Hans Christian Andersen Author Award in 2014.
