It looks like the planned live-action Hollywood film adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira manga is really moving forward. According to Hollywood entertainment website, Variety, Leonardo diCaprio will be producing the film through his production company, Appian Way. They also announced that the Thor: Ragnarok director, Taika Waititi, will be at the helm of the project.

And it seems that the film will be having a big budget too! It will be filming in California, so it will receive receive a $18.5 million tax credit from California. This is part of the state’s Film & TV Tax Credit Program 2.0, and Akira is getting the largest amount of money from that program out of all the recipients. Other projects did not even get a quarter of that amount.


With a producer and director already announced, it won’t be long until we hear some casting news. So stay tuned for more details about the live-action Akira film.
