The passing of legendary mangaka Monkey Punch has left a huge hole in the manga and anime industries. And now, Wowow is paying a fitting tribute, as they have announced that the channel will be reairing episodes from the original Lupin III TV anime. And yes, this is the really old one which originally aired between 1971 and 1972.

Many legends started out their careers directing the Lupin III anime. These include Ghibli heavyweights, Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki, who worked on the anime before founding Studio Ghibli together. The re-airing will be featuring episodes directed by them, as well as other legendary anime greats.

They will also air two cuts from the original 1969 film as well. The first one will be the one featuring Nozawa Yasutomo as Lupin, and it airs on 2nd June at 11 pm JST. Meanwhile, the Cinemascope version, which stars Hirokawa Taichiro as the infamous thief will air on 30th June. Finally, they will be airing a mini film about Lupin III Part I sometime in June as well. It will include commentary from notable film critic Ryusuke Hikawa, as well as director Masaaki Osumi. He directed nine episodes for the original anime, as well as the TV special, Voyage to Danger.
