Kodansha has announced that for the first time ever, George Morikawa’s long-running Hajime no Ippo manga is getting a live-action 2.5D adaptation. They also revealed that the play will run sometime in January 2020.

According to the announcement, this new play will be covering the beginning of the manga’s story. In other words, right when Ippo discovers boxing and begins his journey. As for the staff, cast, and additional details, they revealed that they will announce them sometime in September.

Meanwhile, the manga itself will also have another first. In November, Hajime no Ippo will be opening its very first art exhibition at the Seibu department store in Shibuya.

These new events celebrate 30 years of the series, which launched back in 1989. It follows boxer Ippo Makunouchi as he strives to be a world champion boxer.
