The classic horror manga, Uzumaki, is one of Junji Ito‘s most harrowing and disturbing works… and that’s saying a lot! And during the Crunchyroll Expo event in the United States, they revealed during the Junji Ito panel discussion that Uzumaki is getting a TV anime. The anime will be a short series.

Mushi-shi director Hiroshi Nagahama will be directing the anime over at Production I.G. They also revealed during the panel that Uzumaki will air in the United States before it even does in Japan. Toonami’s Adult Swim programming block will be broadcasting the series in the country.

Uzumaki is quite popular in our west, and Viz distributes it there in English. Here’s how they describe its story:

Kurouzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but a pattern: UZUMAKI, the spiral—the hypnotic secret shape of the world. The bizarre masterpiece horror manga is now available all in a single volume. Fall into a whirlpool of terror!
