The Haruhu Suzumiya series may have already ended, but it’s still quite popular. It’s so popular that it even popped up in actual academic exams! A Japanese exam taker with the Twitter account @Miya__Isla revealed on Twitter a page from the entrance examination paper for Tokai University. This page is quite peculiar, as it features an excerpt from Nagaru Tanigawa’s award-winning light novels.

The page contained an excerpt from Chapter 7 of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. It’s part of the Japanese language comprehension section. Students had to read the excerpt and then answer a few questions based on what they have read.

The Haruhi Suzumiya series launched in 2003, before getting that highly successful TV anime adaptation. It also inspired several manga, as well as The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya anime film. The anime follows a guy named Kyon, who meets a beautiful but weird girl named Haruhi who is only interested in strange things, such as espers, aliens, and time travellers. And as it turns out, Haruhi is a god, even though she doesn’t know it yet, and an alien, an esper, and a time traveller have been sent to watch her.
