Via Reuters: Sony Corp America has purchased a USD 400M stake in Bilibili, approximately 4.98% of the total issued shares of the Chinese streaming site.

Starting out as a local alternative for American VOD service YouTube (which is blocked in China) and Japanese video-based social media site niconico, Bilibili is expanding into other areas such as documentary, dramas, and music videos, attracting more than 130M monthly active users. As part of the new deal, Bilibili and Sony will collaborate on anime releases and streaming esports tournaments.

Bilibili also has existing partnerships with Chinese tech giants Tencent and Alibaba to stream esports tournaments for “League of Legends”, one of the site’s fastest-growing revenue streams.
