Via LiveDoor: Cool Japan — the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s programme to promote the nation’s creativity-based industries both at home and overseas, has recently appointed popular cosplayer Enako as their official Ambassador for Cosplay.

With cosplay becoming one of the pillars of the Cool Japan strategy, the Japanese government is also looking to develop rules to prevent cosplay — which is becoming popular overseas, from becoming a copyright problem for creators and IP owners in Japan.

If cosplay is for non-commercial purposes, it does not violate any copyright laws. However, the Japanese government is now considering passing a law that prohibits cosplay photos from being uploaded on social media sites such as Instagram, as well as profiting from cosplay activities at events.

More details on the new law will be announced in the future. Stay tuned to SO Japan for more!
