A new animated film with roots to Studio Ghibli will be making its premiere this 2016, and it is called Sindbad: The Magic Lamp and the Moving Island. Produced by Nippon Animation, this upcoming anime film features a very familiar look and feel, one that Studio Ghibli fans are most certainly familiar with. Here’s the new trailer:

Looks familiar? That is because the legendary character designer behind My Neighbor Totoro, Yoshiharu Sato, is also the one doing the character designs for Sindbad: The Magic Lamp and the Moving Island, as well as being the anime film’s director. The movie is actually the second of three planned anime featuring Sinbad the Sailor (No, not the one from Magi, the one from classic middle eastern literature).

The movie will follow the legendary Sailor in his adventures, as he searches for a magical lamp, together with his trusty companion, Sana, who is seen by a group of bandits as the key to using an ancient power they have been seeking.

This second movie is slated for release in Japanese theaters on 16 January. The first film, Sinbad: Sora Tobu Hime to Himitsu no Shima, was screened in July earlier this year, while the third movie is slated for March 2016. Nippon Animation was also responsible for World Masterpiece Theater, which of course helped mold Studio Ghibli’s legendary director and co-creator, Hayao Miyazaki.
