Though it did not get as much box office success as previously expected back in Japan, the movie did gain quite the cult following, and was praised by critics both locally and internationally. When Marnie Was There will be going up against other animated movies, such as Anomalisa, Boy and the World, Inside Out, and Shaun the Sheep Movie.

The anime film was also eligible to be nominated for the Oscar for the Original Song category with its theme song, “Fine on the Outside,” however, it was not nominated. Other Oscar-snubs from Japan include Mamoru Hosoda’s The Boy and the Beast, as well as The Laws of the Universe Part 0, which were both eligible for nominations. The last and only Ghibli win at the Oscars was back in 2001, when Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away won Best Animated Feature Picture. Miyazaki himself was honored with the Honorary Award back in November 2014.

The awards ceremony will be held on 28 February 2016, and everyone is surely bracing for it because it might finally be Leonardo di Caprio’s year to win Best Actor, and when that happens, the internet will explode. But then again, it may be a repeat of… well, every year. Remember Leo, conceal, don’t feel.
