Acclaimed Japanese animation studio, Studio Ghibli, has teamed up with French film production and distribution company Wild Bunch, and Dutch animator and director Michael Dudok de Wit for a new animated film called The Red Turtle (La Tortue rouge), and a new trailer for the upcoming film has been streamed:

The film will be screened at the Cannes Film Festival later this month before opening the 40th Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June. It will then make its Japanese premiere in September 2016.

Director de Wit, is an Academy Award-winning animation director, just like Hayao Miyazaki. He actually moved to Japan temporarily in order to direct the film at Studio Ghibli, where he worked with the studio’s own Isao Takahata, who serves as the film’s artistic producer. de Wit is best known for animated short films, and The Red Turtle will be his first feature-length movie. He won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film back in 2001 for “Father & Daughter.”
