Hirokazu Kore-eda’s latest film “Shoplifters” (“Manbiki Kazoku”, literally “The Shoplifting Family”) has won the prestigious Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The film stars Lily Franky and Sakura Ando, as the father and mother of the eponymous shoplifting family.
Hirokazu Kore-eda is an internationally renowned, multi-awarded Japanese film director, producer, screenwriter, and editor. Many of his films have been well received at previous editions of the Cannes Film Festival, including Nobody Knows (2004 — Best Actor for Yuuya Yagira), Still Walking (2008), Like Father, Like Son (2013 — Jury Prize Winner), and After the Storm (2016).
“Shoplifters” tells the story of the impoverished Shibata family living in Tokyo — one of the most expensive places to live in the world. Although father Osamu and his wife Nobuyo try their best to fend for their family, with the occasional low-paying part-time job, they have to rely mostly on their aging mother’s pension check. To make ends meet, Osamu and his son Shota resort to shoplifting, and this is where they meet a homeless girl named Yuri.
