A popular 4-panel manga about a male polar bear who falls in love with a male fur seal pup, “Koisuru Shirokuma” is an unexpected hit in the BL (beast love) genre — sparking a number of succesful tie-ups with other media. Now, “Koisuru Shirokuma” is collaborating with two snow-bound Western flicks for their Japanese releases: “Minus 21° C” (original title: “6 Below: Miracle on the Mountain”), and “Wind River”.
“Minus 21° C” is an American survival drama directed by Scott Waugh, and stars Josh Hartnett and Mira Sorvino. The movie was based on the novel “Crystal Clear”, which tells of the the story of a former professional hockey player who was stranded in the mountains during a fierce snowstorm, and had to rely on his wits and skills to survive.
“Wind River” is a murder mystery film written and directed by Taylor Sheridan. The film stars Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen as a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service tracker and an FBI agent respectively, who try to solve a murder on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming.
Although the two films the manga series has collaborated with seem a little too violent compared to the love story of a polar bear and a seal, it is in theme with the seal’s constant fear of being killed and eaten by the Arctic’s apex predator, so we suppose it’s not too farfetched after all.
