Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker is almost upon us. And now, star John Boyega is making his webshow rounds to promote the film. And when he stopped by First We Feast’s Hot Ones show, he revealed to everyone that he’s really into anime. In fact, he recommended a few titles for those who want to start watching anime themselves, as Hot Ones audiences are a bit more mainstream.

He started talking about anime right around the 8-minute mark when host Shawn evens asked him about anime. You can see in Boyega’s face on how excited he is to talk about the subject.

The Star Wars actor, who plays former Stormtrooper FINN in the films, recommended Attack on Titan, Naruto, and One Punch Man for those seeking to start out.

“Anime, I think because of its long-form format, so, it lasts for ages… you take something like Naruto for example. You literally watch a character grow up day by day, and then there are filler episodes that give you, kind of like, clarity on the world surrounding the leads, or the several different leads in the anime. And it’s just the way they tell stories.

A lot of the time when characters are, like, standing in one scene, you’re going into their subconscious mind, you know. Like, for example, I’m here like, ‘I’m doing well, the chicken wings are good, but shit, I don’t know if this next one’s about to blow my freakin’, freakin’ brains to the sky.’

It’s like that, and they do like a subconscious thing where you go back and forth, and that’s cool. I really like that, it’s a great way of storytelling, it’s fun, and I guess it just taps into the, they tap into the imagination of individuals, and people just really, really love it.”

He also talked about Gundam, which he is really a huge fan of, as well. And apparently, the life-size Gundam in Odaiba really left an impression on him.

Boyega isn’t actually shy when it comes to talking about anime. In fact, he’s more than happy to talk about his favourites. In a previous interview, he even revealed his Top 5, and they are Attack On Titan, Naruto, Seven Deadly Sins, Hunter x Hunter, and Bleach. He also previously stated that if ever there was going to be another live-action Attack on Titan film, he’d wish to play a titan.
