Kunihiko Ikuhara’s “Mawaru PENGUINDRUM” will release with a new 2-part compilation film titled “RE:cycle of the PENGUINDRUM” to commemorate the 10th anniversary of its initial broadcast. The movies are tentatively slated for release in 2022 barring any delays. Ikuhara will be returning to direct, with Lily Hoshino doing character design, and Lapin Track revamping the original BRAIN’S BASE animation as well as animating new footage.

“Mawaru PENGUINDRUM” follows the story of a terminally ill girl named Himari Takakura, who died and was brought back to life by a mysterious spirit that possesses a souvenir store penguin hat; in exchange, the spirit tasks her brothers Kanba and Shoma to find the elusive “Penguindrum”. To further complicate things, donning the penguin hat causes Himari to transform into “The Princess of the Crystal” — an overbearing young woman with dominatrix tendencies.
