A new manga cafe in Nipponbashi, Osaka has just opened, and it has drawn quite a bit of attention. The reason is because boys and “normies” are not allowed inside at all! Sorry, only female otakus are allow entry. The cafe is called Ataraxia Cafe, and it only opened last 26 December 2015, and it provides a refuge for women in an often-male dominated world of anime fandom.
Ataraxia Cafe works just like any Japanese manga cafe, as it offers drinks and snacks as you read a manga or a doujinshi of your choosing. For 1,580 yen, you can drink all the soft-drink you want, and stay inside the cafe for the entire day. You can also play games at your leisure, without getting bothered by anyone, most especially boys.
Another feature of this cafe is that the girls can unwind and be themselves. They can watch their favorite shows and chat with friends all day long, after all, it’s drink-all-you-can.
But aside from the No-Boys-Allowed rule, what makes this cafe even more unique, are the work spaces for female cosplayers. In these work spaces, cosplayers and crafters can just make their own costumes, for their own leisure. They have mannequins and busts for cosplayers who want to style their wigs, or just add the finishing touches to a costume they are working on. These work spaces are perfect for those female cosplayers who live in those tiny apartments with not enough space to properly make a costume… or those who have space but have too much stuff lying around their home that they cannot make costumes properly.
