Via Variety: Taito Okiura, the man responsible for bringing more anime to the international streaming service Netflix, has announced at Netflix’s “See What’s Next Asia” event at the Marina Bay Sands today — 8th November 2018, that it will be bringing five new original anime series to the platform.

“At Netflix, we have chosen to focus on high concept anime with global travel prospects. This is a really big commitment. And the prosperity of Netflix’s anime shows has to be aligned with the prosperity of Japanese anime generally,” Okiura stated.

The five new anime adaptations coming to Netflix are: a “Pacific Rim” anime, which expands on the universe created by Guillermo del Toro and Legendary Pictures; Craig Kyle (“Thor: Ragnarok”) and Greg Johnson (“X-Men: Evolution”) are announced as showrunners. Another title is “Altered Carbon”, which takes place in the same world as the Netflix live-action sci-fi series. It will be written by Dai Sato (“Cowboy Bebop,” “Samurai Champloo”) and Tsukasa Kondo, and animated by Studio Anima.

The post-apocalyptic “Cagaster of an Insect Cage” will be directed by Koichi Chigira (“Last Exile,” “Full Metal Panic!”) and produced by Gonzo (“Hellsing,” “Afro Samurai”). “Yasuke” follows the adventures of an African samurai vassal of Oda Nobunaga, set in an alternative feudal Japan where magic and science exists, and is based on a real historical figure of the same name. “Yasuke” will be animated by the renowed MAPPA (“In This Corner of the World”, “Yuri On Ice,” “Kakegurui”).

The most exciting news, as far as regional fans are concerned, is the inclusion of “Trese” — based on the Philippine graphic novel of the same name by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldissimo. Set in Manila, it follows the adventures of a female exorcist and demon-slayer who takes on the criminal underworld — both in the literal and the metaphorical sense.

“Trese” will be produced by Shanty Harmayn and Tanya Yuson at BASE Entertainment, which is also regionally based with offices in Jakarta and Singapore. Jay Oliva (“Wonder Woman,” “The Legend of Korra”) will serve as Executive Producer.
